S atya is translated as truth. Not only to speak the truth but first of all to become free from illusions. Many people lie to themselves. This is the main condition in almost all our society. For example people think that they have free will but in reality they do not. They are led by desires. Many people cannot even free themselves from simple habits that are harmful, such as smoking, overeating, gossiping, judgment etc. Sometimes though there are people who after being pushed by fear can win over some desire that is destructive for their health. In this case there is no appearance of free will but the fear of death. If you want to investigate your free will, try to stop at least one of your habits. The truth is that we are almost completely made out of different habits.
Another belief that exists in many people, which is usually a lie, is their belief that they are somehow whole - a concrete, single person. In reality people constantly create different fake personalities in them. Inside a person can live simultaneously the “good family man” and the “criminal”, the “tough guy” and the “good boy”, the “serious guy” and the “stupidly funny”, the “logical” and the “thoughtless”. As we have said in the previous part of Ahimsa, in our brain there are many parts and in each of these parts a human starts playing a role: The family man, the boss, the lover, the friendly “buddy” etc. The personalities can be as many as the situations one finds himself/herself in. In every occasion one is different, trying to stand out or the opposite, to hide in the crowd. One is never himself but always in some kind of role. Even now that you are reading this text you are probably entering in one of the most intelligent roles: the role of the spiritual seeker or student. This is one role that should have a purpose to make you arrive to fulfillment and self completion. You are mistaken though if you think that you are already complete. Inside you there exist whole groups of different people who act as they please. Each one of them takes the control of yourself maybe even only for 5 minutes and create whatever he or she wants inside you or outside. Your name which does not change and your body which changes very slowly make you think that you are one concrete and complete person. In reality each different part of your brain has its own reality and qualities. One part can be wise, another practical. All these are necessary of course in our life. The only flaw of this condition is the separation and isolation of these parts. These different parts are like the servants of a huge mansion without the owner being present for a long time. Every one of them does what he likes without any control. There is no one to put them in place. So you find the cook in the living room sleeping in the couch or watching TV as if he were the owner, or maybe the driver decides to cook in the kitchen, the cleaning lady decides to go for a ride with the car etc. Exactly because of this condition many times we feel as if lost in life or we feel hopeless, that there is no chance to arrive to true happiness and to make something real out of our life. It seems to us that our life is a chaos…and of course in this way, as explained above, it really is!
The first thing that will help solve this problem is the steward or the superintendent! In other words this is the most intelligent part of our brain which is loaded with and aiming towards acts for self realization, stability or self development. These are also the aims of all the spiritual practices of yoga. Another way that we go against the spiritual law of Satya is that the majority of people want to present themselves as it pleases them, for example that they are "High" souls, very spiritual, or very successful, with a higher awareness or even enlightened. In reality though all of these are just thoughts and impressions, they do not correspond to reality. Also the majority of the people are attached to their physical body and presence and they do not feel themselves as a soul, but they only like to think that they are a soul and talk about it. Many people may not be aware of their actions or the fact that they are influenced, but when asked they say that they are conscious of what is happening. They live doing one stupid thing after the other but they like to think that they are very intelligent, they enjoy imagining this. Others like to show their “expertise” when in reality they don’t know anything. They have an answer for every occasion and they judge everything that happens in the world, even these things that they have no idea about. This is why Christ said: “You are all sinners, sons and daughters of lie”. Our brain seems like embroidery or a collage made of many lies and we can really understand that only if we are constantly in a state of a heightened awareness and for a long time. Until humans become sincere first and mostly towards themselves, even their spiritual path and spiritual evolution will be another lie they like to believe for themselves. We were born in a world which is heavily conditioned, filled with layers of lies upon lies, and for many years we have been raised and educated through many lies. Now we need to re-examine everything that we have learned. Use every occasion of your life and every incident for realizing this truth. Lies are indeed a scourge for the inner truth and peace. Vanity and the inner dialogue are the things that we need to stop if we want to make our life truly beautiful, truly blissful. This is the first goal we should set in our lives!! OM!
